I've been following Common now for a few albums and honestly, this rapper gets better with age. Each album gets better and better. My first couple listens to Be didn't go down that well but then I remembered how different Electric Circus was compared to the Like Water For Chocolate. The same goes between Be and Electric Circus. Be ends up pulling out even more soul than the funkier Circus. He seems to have decreased the amount of guest artists on this album and after a couple listens it seems to hold together a little better than previous efforts. One of the artists that appears a couple of times is Kanye West (who ironically has the other really impressive hip hop album this year). John Legend and John Mayer make appearances as well but that's about it for big names. Be is a great hip hop album that does require some thought and some openness in order to fully appreciate. This means that it will fail on the commercial charts.

* Although much credit is due to Kanye for an almost flawlessly produced album, his vocals and verses seem to hinder the whole Common vibe, dropping several great tracks down to average.
