I wasn't too sure about Hello, Good Friend when it landed on my desk. It had emo written all over it and when I read that The Rocket Summer was basically the work of one 22 year old named Bryce Avary I was even more standoffish. But, I decided to give it a fair shot and once you get over the cuteness of Bryce's voice there is some decent songs here. Tim O'Heir of Sebadoh and the Jealous Sound fame took on the production duties so Hello Good Friend sounds very nice. Avary chooses to use a combination of guitars and piano to come up with his Rocket Summer sound. There is no denying that this album is full on emo but it is good and catchy like a nice slab of pop should be. Give it a listen, you should know within minutes if you can stomach The Rocket Summer. If so, you might be in for a very listenable treat.
