Wow, to be a Wainwright. Martha is the sister of Rufus and daughter of Loudon Wainwright III and Kate McGarrigle. From her bio it sounds like she denied her musical calling for many years and then finally embraced it. Martha Wainwright's eponymous debut starts out with the beautiful, Emmylou Harris-like "Far Away". This is before she really starts rocking out with "G.P.T.". This one has a Rufus flavor to it but only in song arrangement. This ends up being my favorite track on the album. After this she quiets down again on "Factory". The arrangement on "These Flowers" is beautiful. It is very dramatic sounding great at night on headphones (as does the rest of the album). I can't help but compare Martha's voice to that of Emmylou Harris. Martha's might be a little more youthful but similar just the same. "When the Day Is Short" is probably the most 'country' track on the album, the rest keeping a little closer to the pop territory. One of the albums highly entertaining songs is "Bloody Mother Fucking Asshole". It's not as angry as the title may indicate. All in all, Wainwright has come up with a very impressive debut.
