Richard Swift is a new signing for the beloved Secretly Canadian label and it brings some pretty lovely songs to the roster. I had heard that the label was trying to get Calgary's Chad VanGaalen and lost out on him to Sub Pop. That would have been a good addition but Richard Swift looks like he's in for taking the label in some new directions. The Novelist/Walking Without Effort (aka The Richard Swift Collection Volume 1) is a double album collecting a lot of the material the songwriter has already released. He is slated for a new album early next year. There is no getting away from a Rufus Wainwright comparison. He has the same charisma but not near as flamboyant as Rufus. It is really a shame that the masses haven't heard these songs much early. They are some really fine examples of great chamber pop songwriting and delivery. Not only does Swift possess great songwriting skills and an amazing voice but his production is top notch as well. I can't pick a favorite album out of the two either. They both have many highlights and compliment each other in this package. With some heavy media push, California native Richard Swift should see some success with The Novelist/Walking Without Effort. I look forward to his album out next year.
