Atreyu - Suicide Notes and Butterfly Kisses
Atreyu have provided me with a load of hardcore pleasure with their release of the cleverly entitled Suicide Notes and Butterfly Kisses. Unlike you would expect with hardcore bands, Atreyu comes from California. Orange County to be more exact. The frontman Alex Varkatzas is an angry young man as well as a brilliant hardcore songwriter. The songs actually have melodies entrenched within the painful surroundings that are topped off with Alex’s super harse vocals. Alex has the kind of vocal delivery that you sit back after the album and wonder how the buy does it night after night on tour. In accompaniment to the harse vocals there is an added vocalist every once and a while. Drummer Brandon Saller is the Yang to Alex’s Ying and it works so well. Not only will east coast hardcore fanatics revel in the scheer brilliance of Atreyu but Orange County punks should be able to find comfort in the subtle melodies. Atreyu has to be one of the best releases for Victory this year.
