Australia's Dirty Three have been making somber, emotionally shattering music for years. Like countrymen Nick Cave, they push boundaries of sound and lyrical subject matter outside the realm of the normal pop song. This third release--they've since released four others-cements their brooding signatures while at the same time proving to be their most abrasive record. "I remember when you used to love me"; "red" "warren's lament" waver between rocking emotions and quiet poignant interludes. For the uninitiated, this is a good place to start exploring the band's considerable talents. They create more colors in a traditional song structure than most bands do when trying to air it all and jam.
