New York noise band, Hiretsukan, recalls both the heyday of hardcore and what music will sound like a couple years down the road on this, their second release (the broke up shortly after their first, 2002's "Invasive/Exotic", only to reform recently). Led by the amazing, terrifying vocals of Michelle Proffit and the evil guitar of Dave Sanders, Hiretsukan straddle the line between the classic and the truly explorative. "Song for Wilhelmina Vautrin" and "9 Year Barrier" displays a subtlety in lyrics and heart that any college boy would lvoe, while at the same time grounding their intelligence in reality, not book learning. This is a band that knows their history, and knows how it wants to shred it. "Tight Not Touching" and "Her Article" place them at the head of the class in NYC in terms of smarts and daring, and if their press notes are correct and some folks at G7 begged them to reform, we be owing big-time.
