Being a punk band with soul from D.C. invites some pretty heavy comparisons. A Day in Black and White manage to add another chapter to that city's hardcore history while standing out as their own real deal. Vocalist/Guitarist David Morse has been the force driving the band's deepening sound. "New Energy" is an apt title for many of these songs, which build off of a hardcore base and venture out into risky tonal waters. "Lame Duck" and "Long Distance Sing Effects" show a confidence in that exploration. This is a band on the rise, and rising musically most of all. Their next record may be essential.

This is a pretty solid album, on the whole. The band knows it's way around experimental punk, and it infuses plenty of variation not only in the various styles they conjure up, but in their basic punk machinations, and all that spice is what's nicest about "Notes". The use of harmonics on "New Energy" is a fine touch, and other highlights include the raw catchiness found on "Nothing With Nothing", and the sludgy build and eventual freak-out of "All Plots". I'm left wondering if the band has done anything since this '05 release, because they've definitely shown enough flashes of talent across the board on "Notes" to warrant further investigating.
