I didn't really get into Love As Laughter until their Sea To Shining Sea, well into their career. Well, Laughter's Fifth is on my desk and I gave it a go. It is every bit as impressive as their previous album. It has qualities that would liken them to a Pavement band with some quirky pop songs under their wing. The band has really morphed from what started out as a solo project into something much more band like. The songs on Laughter's Fifth are much more pronounced and cohesive. I even notice a difference between this one and Shining Sea. Sam Jayne has really turned into a masterful indie pop songsmith. It's the minimal songs like "Idol Worship" that really make his talents stand out. Beethoven's Fifth Symphony changed the way people looked at classical music. Love As Laughter's Fifth may change the way people look at indie pop music. Maybe not quite as significant but still an album to further a quality band and an album that will only get better over time.
