Africa has been the focus of a lot of great compilations lately, mostly showcasing the influences of funk and psychedelia on local music in the late 60's and early 70's. What shines through in these discs is not imitation, but absorption. This is African music, blending Western sounds to its own beats. Ghana, like Guinea and the West Indies, seemed most enamored of Western funk and soul, and tossed it into an already hot pot of local rhythm and percussion grooves. The 3rd generation Band ("Because of Money") and The Sweet Talks ("Eyl Su Ngaangaa") breakdown the funk into its most fundamental elements: rock-hard drumming and razor sharp rhythm guitar. Ebo Taylor and Honny & The Bees Band add some soul, and The African Brothers'"Self-Reliance" is a reminder of how the social and the political is never far from the dancing in African music.
