Are you a metal fan but can't find a happy medium with the vocals? Well why don't you try out metal sans vocals? Pelican is not a brand new band. In fact The Fire In Our Throats Will Beckon The Thaw is the Chicago based band's sophomore album and wow, what an album. If you are not a metal fan don't run off quite yet because I believe that there is something here for fans of the likes of Godspeed You Black Emperor and like music. The songs reach epic proportions with with 4 of the 7 songs reaching over the 9 minute mark. Even at this, Pelican does not bore. The dynamics of this album really need to be heard. There is so much here that it is hard to digest in only a couple sittings. Right in the middle of all the epics is a nice little acoustic track titled "". Whether the translation is meant to be bullet, I'm not sure but it is a great song nonetheless and breaks up the heavier songs nicely. Feedback ushers you right back in on "Red Ran Amber" letting the listener know that it ain't quite over yet.
The Fire In Our Throats is a great testament to this new sonic style of metal. While I don't think you will be seeing it any time soon on the Billboard charts I do know that college charts would be amiss if it wasn't on there soon.
