It seems like Portastatic is almost taking over for Mac McCaughan's main project. For just reason too. Bright Ideas is the second brilliant album for his Portastatic project. The Summer Of The Shark really took the band to new levels and Bright Ideas keeps the momentum going nicely. As always, there isn't the rock that Mac unleashes in Superchunk. Instead we are presented with some nice adult focused indie rock that will appeal to quite a wide audience. It's one of those albums that doesn't require much attention to listen to but if you do take some time to focus then you start to feel the charms seep out. Some of the more rocking tracks are some of the best coming from the Portastatic camp. See "White Wave" for a great example of this. I even like the strings he throws on "Truckstop Cassettes". There is no denying Mac's all around brilliance when it comes to songwriting. This belongs in the collection of any good pop music fan.
