This is another album that has had so much hype lately that I had to check out. The premise behind Verve Remixed is some of today’s top producers and DJ’s were invited to go through the Verve jazz vaults and dig out some rarities to be reworked. Sounds fun. It has ended up a very nice downtempo compilation that fits right into your late evening soundtrack. What they end up with is a very classy electronica album. What else did you think when the Thievery Corporation selection has the classic Astrud Gilberto singing throughout. Rae & Christian choose a sexy Dinah Washington track entitled “Is you is or is you ain’t my baby. We also get vocals provided by other divas like Nina Simone, Shirley Horn, Sarah Vaughan, and how could a compilation like this get away without Billie Holliday (Tricky has a go at “Strange Fruit). You don’t have to be a fan of jazz to enjoy this album but I’m not saying that you won’t end up a jazz vocalist fan by the time the disc is over. Verve has already contemplated that so there is a companion CD available called Verve Unmixed. Enjoy with many martinis.
