A-Frames are a Seattle-based rock outfit that have been flying under the radar now for a number of years. It is only now that they get the support that they deserve for their angular post-punk sound with the help from a deal with Sub Pop. Black Forest is their debut for the Sub Pop label but it is the band's third full-length album. Upon first listen Black Forest may leave some scratching their heads. It's not a super noisy affair but the way some of the songs seem to drone on could drive the unsuspecting running for a bunker. I came out with my head covered for a second listen and was rewarded with some fairly clever art-punk style songs. They aren't as out there as the Liars so if that makes you feel better then keep reading. Some of the tracks masquerade as ballads such as "Eva Braun" but for the most part things are kept quite loud and interestingly produced. What does that mean? It means a dark, mostly loud, and angular post-punk album. If you want to head straight to the dark side then head to "My Teacher", one of the creepiest tracks out of the bunch. A-Frames have given us a decent Sub Pop debut and one can only hope that the next one is even weirder.
