Paleo - Misery, Missouri
If Jandek was sorta happy and loved mid-80's lo-fi, he might sound like this. But Paleo is no Davandra Banhardt, virtually announcing an eccentric personality in hopes to cash in. Paleo is original in real, sometimes deep, ways. While his guitar playing is unique--he sounds like he just picked it up yesterday in a southern thrift store, what gives his music its singular air is the drumming. Sounding like he is playing with crusty brushes from a pantry down the hall, the drumming ramps up both the carnival and the creepy quotient. ""Beautiful Lady, Beautiful Girl" and "You and Dog" are especially ripe for such a treatment. Supposedly recorded in a room on a horse ranch during a two week stay, Paleo (aka "closetgoth poet" and painter Dave Strackany) also sues mandolin and accordion to odd effect. These are tales of love gone bad, bad gone love, and bad getting really bad. I felt like I was listening to guy gone fetal in the corner over his losses, but who was starting to forget who he had lost. "19 Ninety-Two" will give you the willies. "Closetgoth?"
