Noah's Ark is my first exposure to the charming Casady sisters, Bianca and Sierra. CocoRosie received a lot of critical acclaim with their debut La Maison de Mon Reve but I ignored the hype and missed out. Anyway, Noah's Ark landed on my desk and I was very curious on what this CocoRosie was all about. At least on this album, the sisters fit somewhere in the psych-folk landscape right alongside the eclectic Joanna Newsom quite nicely. If Newsom was a little more psych and experimental she would end up sounding just like CocoRosie.
There are some key guest artists include Antony from Mercury Prize winners Antony and the Johnsons ("Beautiful Boys") and Devendra Banhart on "The Sea Is Calm" (even though he didn't make it to the studio, he phoned in the spoken French instead). But for me the guests are far from the highlight. The girls are at home when they are tinkling on their instruments and singing along. Their songs have a haunting quality to them, one of those bands that creeps up and grabs you when you don't expect. CocoRosie might drive the uninitiated insane with the girls crooning but I found them to be very soothing and I wouldn't be surprised if Noah's Ark ends up on my year end list in some capacity. So having not heard La Maison I have fallen in love with Noah's Ark.
