Honeycomb was a very hard album for me to review. I'm not sure what's in Frank Black's head right now but it sure isn't rock and roll. Frank headed into a Nashville studio to record this and found out that the pending Pixies reunion was a go so he only had 5 days to record Honeycomb. For that matter Honeycomb as a whole is much mellower than anything he's ever done with the Catholics. No, it's much mellower than anything Black has ever done in his life. I'm talking covering Dan Penn's "Dark End Of The Street" but almost doing it note for note. Yeah, that isn't the Black that I grew up with. Now something you might expect from Frank is doing a duet with his ex-wife about their failed relationship. This is one of the highlights of the album for me. One of the big low points has to be the cheesy "Violet". The album tends to have a bit of that Nashville twang but you can recognize Frank's voice immediately. By the end of about 5 listens I came to peace with this album. It's not bad but it certainly isn't his best. But I think there will be many a fan that will eat this album up. It's just too much of a departure for me. Maybe I'm shallow or maybe Honeycomb will grow on me over time, much like the Pixies did.
