I was quite taken by The Clumsy Lovers upon hearing their last album After the Flood but I feel that that may have been a one time thing. I can't find much to really get into on Smart Kid. Sure, the songs are well crafted but it just feels like something is missing on this album. The album starts out with the Barenaked Ladies-like "Bobby Banjo", with nary a catchy chorus. I wonder if maybe they just picked a poor album opener but I felt this way on more than a few songs. I don't know what made me think that After The Flood was any different but Smart Kid just seemed to be lacking. The music is half decent but I felt like the band had turned into a bit of a mix of Great Big Sea and Barenaked Ladies, probably not the most desirable place for a band like The Clumsy Lovers. If they are half as successful then they might actually be happy with where they chose to go. I think they just need to work on even catchier and memorable choruses. That might sell me.
