Imogen Heap - Speak For Yourself

Soothing South London bubble pop is built around slow and soft Dido with droplets of Bjork and Aimee Mann vocals that meander through this lush offering. 'Have You Got It In You?' is a provocative poser that features rumbling backing instrumentation, as doubts about other people's motives are exposed. This 3rd album cements Imogen's status as an endearing and no frills pop purveyor. The empty nature of relationships comes under the microphone in a laid back bluesy nature, featuring tumultuous R N B instrumental interludes in 'Loose Ends', while the lyrics are sharp and to the point;

"So what do you say we give it up and walk away?
We're overrated anyway.
We're kissing without kissing; we've got it down to a fine art."

Despite passing the respectability mark at least an album ago, Imogen has not lost any of her edge; deciding to shun the lure of major labels, by re-mortgaging her flat and releasing this album on her own label. Her vibrant independence shines through the sonic boom of 'Daylight Robbery' that possesses quivering bass lines and a nifty electro kick. The aforementioned bold decision has not affected the sound or recording quality on this offering, as Imogen continues to show the vibrant and alternative side to pop music (yes, it does exist, believe it or not?).

Imogen Heap certainly is unique, as Mr. Adair noted in his review -- she does pop, but it's about as far from the over-sexualized Britney Spears dance beats as you can imagine. However, my qualms with this album are somehow similar to those I have with Spears. It's a little over-processed, a little too sweet and bland.

"Hide and Seek" is at first a joy to listen to, simple and emotional, but that's mostly due to the the electronic, "I'm-singing-underwater" effect -- take that away, and little is left. "Goodnight and Go" is a little more solid. I enjoy it in that it shows both a gentle vulnerability and a vocal, musical and emotional strength.

Can not say i agree with the first statement of the original review. Imogen Heap in my opinion is a completely unique entity. She is amazing. To compare Immi to anyone would be a travesty. Aside from this albums completely ridiculous sound(in a very good way), what makes it all the better is that it is her own. Speak For Yourself is her baby. This is not something that comes along every day. The track "Hide and Seek" basically says everything about the album you need to know. This is easily the most quality set on the album and is one of the best songs i can ever remember hearing in the recent past and distant past. Along with songs like "Headlock" and "Goodnight and Go" this album is not one to be passed up on. You can feel her emotion and she can leave you feeling numb. I personally lose my self in this album. Do not cheat your self Imogen Heap put out an amazing album that is far better than anything else that i have heard from similar artists. The reason for that is that there are not any similar artists.
