And now comes yet another XTC revivalist but these English blokes finally get it right. They focus on the melodies of XTC rather than the dancey beats, unlike one of the members former band The Futureheads. It's not like Field Music is slow and lacking excitement because there is plenty of that to go around. In fact there are as much fun hooks in this self-titled debut as there is in a New Pornographers album. "17" is filled with hooks all over the place. The problem I have with field music is that although the music is so harmonious it seems to lack structure. Lots of oohs and aaahs in great pitch but the songs seem to jump around without many building blocks. The dual vocal harmonies are fantastic and one of the main selling points. Don't get me wrong, Field Music is still a gas to listen to and I did enjoy it but I feel that there might have been a little more if the choruses and verses were a little more defined and the music wasn't quite as jerky. But remember, this is their first album. Let's see where they can go. They have the chops, the harmonies and the talent now they just need to work on the structure and Field Music could easily be in everybody's stereo.
