Old Reliable is back after a nasty solo project by lead singer Shuyler Jansen. The band is thankfully unscathed after his strange departure into whatever it was he felt he had to get out of his system. Old Reliable, if you are unfamiliar, is a roots band that plays cool country like nobodies business and has been doing so for over 10 years now. The band is now home to a new drummer, Mike Silverman, who was the bands original drummer. It was hard to improve on the impressive Gradual Moment but I think The Burning Truth but I think the diversity of this album outweighs what they did on their previous album. That is due to the shared songwriting duties on this album with Jansen and Davis taking turns at writing and singing. We even get treated to a slab of dirty rock in the form of Jansen's "Before U C Me Explode". I still seem to sway towards Davis as a preferred songwriter. His songs just seem to be slightly more sincere and have the pure country feel to them. The album seems to have a rawer sound than previous efforts. There will be no lost fans over The Burning Truth. Old Reliable are turning out to be an Alberta institute of reliable music.
