From the opening baroque piano, you get the sense that here is a band that takes itself maybe a bit too seriously. When the dramatic, MeatLoaf/System of a Down hybrid-metal kicks in, you pat yourself on the bat for the intuition. Ok, maybe the aging wizard on the cover gave it away. Chiodos likes to vary tempos, stress power chords here, meandering grooves there, but it never gives the listener a sense of depth or ambition. Every song sooner or later slips into one of several well-worn Prog-rock escape routes, that lead nowhere. Their press release states that the band takes pride in the fact that they sound better live than in the studio; hopefully that's true and not a preemptive strike to those who thinks this sounds tired.

I'm also going to have to disagree with the review. Chiodos has a raw and unique sound when compared with other bands of the screamo genre. Something about the lead singers voice is just captivating and the addition of the brutal guitar riffs make this album a must have

Chiodos definitely has an interesting style to them. Their songs will definitely grow on you, there is no denying that. But then again, being heard so much by these little kids and how they idolize Chiodos frontman, Craig Owens, can get a little annoying. It's hard to find anyone without a chiodos shirt now. You might think that has nothing to do with this album, but it has EVERYTHING to do with the album. You see, the kids wouldnt wear this stuff for a bad band, except with aiden... they're just terrible. But, Chiodos is a great band with a lot of potential. They can easily switch their songs up mid-riff, which makes everything completely unpredictable. This album does get better with every listen, but sooner or later, you'll reach the max amount of listens before you grow tired of it.

i can't help but disagree with this. everytime i listen to some of these songs, they get better and better. and im surprised you dont have a comment on Craig Owens voice. personally i think he has an amazing talent and it being mixed with these instruments is yes, unconventional yet thats what makes me like it.

From the start, I was weary about this band.Looking at the lyrics, you would think that this is yet another album about some guys broken heart, and it is...sort of. After a run through the whole cd, you will realize that this is something different and similar at the same time. The varying tempos, the dynamic breakdowns, and the soft vocals and gut wrenching screams may seem like every other post-hardcore band around, but Chiodos seems to do it with a style that draws the listener in and holds your attention till the last note of the somber piano. It will take several listens to realize the beauty of this album. At times, vocalist Craig Owens seems almost suicidle, then the mood completly changes with the next track to upbeat, almost charismatic.I admit, this isnt for everyone. At times the depressing, dark ambiance of this album seems to get a little monotonous. But its still a brilliant piece of art non the less. Chock full of strange metaphors, heartbreak and a hate/love mentality twords the opposite sex, this album will surely please any fan of post-hardcore.
