You may remember the band Six Finger Satellite and one member John Maclean. Well now John has gone Spanish and called his new project simply The Juan Maclean. Don't expect an extension of the Six Finger Satellite sound here at all. No, Maclean is into the DFA sound and Less Than Human is closer to a House style music than the electro pop they were turning out previously. Maclean was ready to quit after Six Finger Satellite called it quits. He was too far down the drug path to continue music but longtime SFS soundman James Murphy. Yes, of the DFA production team as well as LCD Soundsystem. The music here is primarily electronic and while it does feature a house flavor fairly prominently, it is John's dexterity as a songwriter that keeps Less Than Human from sounding like the latest techno infestation. The music works well as forefront music or even as background music with its absence of vocals. Juan talks about the style of music that he is most comfortable with and how groups like Daft Punk beat him to the punch. Well, Daft Punk does have something to be worried about, The Juan Maclean stealing all their fans. It may be too late for Juan but Less Than Human is still a very decent electronic album.
