Calla - Collisions
While I wasn't overly taken by Calla's last effort, Televise, Collisions seems to have snuck up on me and I have new respect for the New York based band. So much, in fact, that this is one of my current faves. This album was recorded in late 2004 with Chris Zane once again. It has a similar sound to that of Televise but there seems to be something a little more refined going on. Call it experience or just luck but Collisions has so much more depth to it than the one dimensional Televise. One of the many standout tracks is "Play Dead". It has a thick guitar that pretty much dictates the tempo of the song. One ironic title is "Pulverized", probably the mellowest track on Collisions. Once again, Calla don't necessarily rock but they are indeed a rock band. The band is very deep and dark but there are so many elements of the band that stand out making this a great album. I highly recommend Collisions as a mandatory listen. It will be an album that you know within one listen if you will like or not.
