Sherwood - Sing, But Keep Going
When you self-release an EP and demand reaches 6000 something must being going your way. That's exactly what happened with California-based Sherwood, as well as landing a spot on the Warped Tour in 2004. Sing, But Keep Going is their debut album and it is a nice slice of pop-punk with a lot more riding on the pop than punk. I would guess that Sherwood will get lumped into the emo category but Sing has too many pop hooks and isn't whiney, so I would say that pigeon-hole would be wrong. The cheese factor that most emo has is missing. Sherwood may be a young band but they are mature with their songwriting already. Songs are damn catchy but not in your face. Sing, But Keep Going opens strong with the understated "We Do This To Ourselves" and follows it up with the pinnacle of the album, "Traveling Alone", a song that seems to have everything turned on right. The album has a couple of really quiet ballad-type songs but they don't really seem out of place for this gentle band. I think some punk fans would agree that Sherwood is a good band but this album is mostly for fans of good power-pop.
