Koufax - Hard Times are in Fashion
It seems like Koufax have taken a bit of a longer break than usual in the whole emo/rock scene. Their so-called breakthrough (I would hardly call them successful yet), Social Life came out in 2002 so a good three years later we see the follow-up Hard Times Are In Fashion. The band have kept up with the pop sound that they have been working to perfect on previous albums but this time around you wouldn't be far off by throwing them in the mod revival that's coming our way from England. While Koufax haven't changed their sound all that much (except for being a little more upbeat), they have indeed refined it. Songs like "Five Years of Madness" showcase some fine songwriting and musicianship. There are some campy songs ("Isabelle") that would sound at home on a Rufus Wainwright album. And there are a few others that probably should have been left off of Hard Times ("Blind Faith", "Get Us Sober"). Otherwise, Hard Times Are In Fashion is quite a solid album and one that marks Koufax's next step quite prominently. So just ignore the stereotype that comes with Doghouse records and give Koufax a once over. It's all you will need to tell if you love 'em or hate 'em.
