One of my favorite rock bands in recent years is Desaparecidos in which Denver Dalley was a member along with one Connor Oberst. Denver Dalley's other band is Statistics and it is a much different beast than Desaparecidos ever was. Often Lie is his sophomore album as Statistics and it is a fine example of what kind of pop mastery one can come up with in their bedroom. The album starts out with the strongest song on the set, "Final Broadcast". It begins fairly mellow with Denver's voice gently guiding you in right before a wash of guitars breaks in. Then we get into big washes of shoegazer type rock on songs like "No Promises". I'm sure the emo kids would like Statistics but the reach of the group will stretch far beyond that small stereotype. Songs like "A Foreword" have so much going for them that it would be a shame if Dalley's band didn't get the exposure it deserved but I've been in the business long enough to know that that will probably be the case. Be one that takes the time to track down Often Lie. It's a great pop album with some pretty cool ideas.
