An excellent collection of Black Sabbath covers that offers more than a few surprises. The bludgeoning you expect is here, especially from Racebannon ("Sabbath Bloody Sabbath") Ruins (a twisted, "Stars on 45"-ish mix of classic Sab riffs). But there is also a tribute to the versatility of those monster chords. Four Tet's somber, broken take on "Iron Man" makes it sound like a lost country blues dirge; Matmos shapes "F/X" into a found sound message from hell. Cello creates a mood on Grails' country phrasings on "Black Sabbath" in a way that is creepier than the even the original pretended to be. The Curtis Harvey Trio's brittle "Changes" could have been an outtake from Plastic Ono Band. It would have been easy to take a bunch of metal bands and have them worship at Ozzy's altar for this tribute. Props to the folks at Temporary Residence for seeing deeper than that, and for opening new possibilities for the tunes to be explored.
