If John Coltrane was alive today and got ahold of a sampler and a mixer, Confield might be the kind of music Coltrane would make. That being said, Autechre isn’t an instantly likeable CD. You have to listen to it multiple times in multiple settings. I have done Confield while I have been working (a great soundtrack for web work), while I have been reading, while I have been walking, and while I have been trying to sleep. In each of these settings you can find something unique and indivual of the other setting that you listened to it in. The first track is the big test. On “VI Scose Poise there is absolutely no rhythm to be found. That comes on “Cfern although disjointed. As different songs weave their way in and out of your conscience you will realize just what geniuses that Sean Booth and Rob Brown really are. There will be times that you strip of your headphones in complete frustration while other times you shake your head when the whole thing is over. Sort of like coming out of a deep trance. Autechre is one of those electronic artists that you will absolutely never hear being played at a club. It is completely undanceable but brilliant just the same. Confield is their most obscure work yet and it will even challenge the best Autechre fan out there.
