Sleep Station has been around for a few years and they have been very ambitious in their output. After The War is their latest effort and my first exposure to this band from New Jersey. Now it may seem strange for a band as unknown as Sleep Station to try and pull of a concept album about a war but that seems to be what Dave Debiak seems to like to do. No, this isn't a period piece. Instead we are presented with some of the finest modern pop songs penned. If you threw a track like "Burden To You" on a standard radio station, I would like to think that this band would be as popular as the next. But the fortunate thing for Sleep Station is that they haven't made it on the radio and that this is a band that people seek out and are so excited when they find this little gem. At times I can't help but think if Kurt Cobain wasn't as mentally troubled he might have written tracks like this. A closer comparison might be Elliott Smith but even that doesn't really do Sleep Station justice. There are many mellow tracks on this album but there are tracks that rock pretty good with a great pop melody such as "Silver In The Sun" or "Caroline". After The War is one of those albums that you will have to hear for yourself. You will end up loving or hating it. I ended up the former.
And while I hope Sleep Station members are on to bigger and better things with a new band called New London Fire. On their site they claim that "after months of experimentation...with Sleep Station, we have finally come to realize that we are a brand new band with brand new members and a brand new sound." They go on to state that Sleep Station will live on with David Debiak and a new album should be out in the near future.
