"Hey instrument of Death/sing to me once again" Nibblet announces on "Safety Pants". This, her third record, is one long wrestling match with old death, but it is her voice that shines through as the true intimidating instrument here. Produced by the prolific and probably cloned Steve Albini, who gives the sound a claustrophobic, menacing sound, this sounds like the reply to Exile on Main St. that Liz Phair wished that she had pulled off. "Good To Me" and "Handsome" slobber along like the best of Mudhoney, while "Kidnapped by Neptune" stretches the boundaries of techno beats to dark effect. Drummer Jason Kourkounis is the unsung hero of the set; his pounding and inspired beats often rival Nibblet's vocals, a call and response much evident in the stunning "Valvoline" and the creepy "Fuck Treasure Island." There is a deranged gospel feel to this record that seems as effortless as it does forced in some of Patti Smith and P.J. Harvey, two gutsy female poets to whom Scout Nibblet will no doubt be compared. She belongs in that category and then some.
