One should add, Holy Grail to the title, since this is a revelation for Albert Ayler fans, a gift beyond compare. With its rarities, live tracks, and demos, this 9 CD monster collection is probably the most comprehensive set ever compiled on one artist. There is even a 200 page book that describes the man and his impact on free jazz. Ayler took his mission to spread spirituality seriously, and his is the prime example in modern music of that drive to reach for the mystic. He took Coltrane as a starting point and blew it up. While this is not for the faint of heart-Ayler makes Captain Beefheart sound like Clay Aiken-it is worth the investment in time, attention, and money. This is a major statement, and Albert Ayler is a major artist.
