Get Behind Me Satan is the follow-up to the very successful Elephant and I think the White Stripes have managed to do it once again. Jack and Meg decide to throw us a bit of a curve ball with the the amazingly dirty opener "Blue Orchid". It has quite a basic rock riff that is so fuzzy with Jack White singing in his best Beck falsetto. But it is so not the White Stripes we have come to know and love. But then they hit us with a marimba (I think) on "The Nurse". It's a catchy little track but "My Doorbell" takes the cake for the best White Stripes songs ever. It's just catchy as hell ("I been thinking about my doorbell/When you gonna ring it, when you gonna ring it"). Is that an alarm clock in "Take, Take, Take"? You only hear it once in the song and it always scares the shit out of me. And what about all the blues rave ups that they get into like "Instinct Blues", sounding more like the Black Keys than The White Stripes. So I do have to give Jack credit, he keeps us guessing at the White Stripes and in doing so he remains very relevant in this day and age of unrelevant bands.
