First off, to even think of covering a Coltrane record song for song, using only guitar and drums, is disturbed. To cover a record from Coltrane's visionary period, where he was both blowing his way into the Mystic and creating free-jazz, is psychotic. Yet Cline and Bendian not only do the original justice, but take off into their own heaven on occasion.
Nels Cline is a frightening guitar player as it is; here, his lines are so fierce and deep that metal axemen ought to just wrap themselves and their guitars in pink ribbons and go for a prance. Greg Bendian's drumming is nearly as fearless, but provides whatever solid ground there is in the music. This is two masters, who use another master's work as a frame for full-on exploration.
