Stars After Stars After Stars contains likeable if slight covers; Spike Priggen deserves kudos for releasing a record of covers for a sophomore disc. And the influences are right on: Big Star and Pontiac Brothers covers, Bun.E. Carlos from Cheap Trick drumming on a few cuts. This aspires to be like Lennon's Rock & Roll, or Bowie's Pin-Ups, a tribute to influences on his pop sensibility. It comes across rather as a Spike Priggen cover record; namely, a nice listing of favorite voices by someone who hasn't found his own voice yet. But he has dug relatively deep for some of these tunes (The Pontiac's "Be Married Song" one of the all-time great relationship gripers), which means that he at least has a good ear. I'd like to see him re-record this after a few more original records give him a chance to show what he's got. THAT will either truly be in Lennon or Bowie territory, available at Starbucks for fiddy-cent.
