Another installment of the great series that unearths forgotten honk-tonk gems and places them side by side with more well-known greats. This series is a primer on the roots of most American music, at least the White side. The Carter Family, Jimmie Rodgers, Bill Monroe, and the Blue Sky Boys are here, but the more obscure acts hold their own. "Nobody's Business" by Riley Puckett, Cliff Carlise's "That Nasty Swing" and "Prisoner Song" by Vernon Dalhart: all these songs ought to be heavily covered by the enterprising artist who picks up this disc.
In an era in which even country music, that last holdout to Modernity, is becoming background noise for advertising and the stuff of gossipy behind-the-music emptiness, this series is a reminder of how hardcore and vital the music is when done right. And. Live and raw from Appalachia, done right from the very beginning.
