Molotov - Con Todo Respeto
Covers are almost never creative. They take old songs and rehash them with a few changes here and there and can be a cheap ploy by bands to get a sentimental reaction out of people. Molotov on the other hand couldn't wait to do some major surgery on the songs they selected for their album aptly titled "Con Todo Respeto" which means With all due respect. The songs are used as a starting point and Molotov runs with them from there. The first song is called "Amateur" which is simply the hardest rocking rendition of Falco's "Rock Me Amadeus" I will probably ever hear. "Marciano" is a cumbia take on the Misfits' "I Turned Into a Martian" that works well and demonstrates the bands willingness to completely turn a song on its head. The next song is a cover of "The Revolution Will Not Be Televised" which is updated for a Latin audience. Other notable songs on the album are "Chavas" a cover of "Girls" by the Beastie Boys and a cover of "Da Da Da" by Trio that you might remember from the Volkswagen ads that were ubiquitous in the 90's. The album really starts to get interesting towards the end when they begin to mash up songs like on "Perro Negro Granjero" which puts together ZZ Top's "la Grange and El Tri's "Perro Negro y Callejero." Even better than that song is "Aguela" where the band takes a song called "Mi abuela" and puts it together with The Clash's "The Magnificent Seven" and Young M.C's "Bust A Move" molded into old school rap goodness. Overall though the album was hit and miss with some of the songs not really working, but the effort is commendable considering that the songs that they worked with are already hits and it can be hard to improve upon them. I would recommend this album to fans of the band or anyone that wants to see how hard a Falco song can rock.
