The Meat Purveyors are the guys who sit in a corner of the party deliberately drinking the worst beer they could find to bring, and looking at each other knowingly when anyone walks by. They have the skinny on the Truth, and aren't afraid to show off.
Every drinker has his choice of what will bury him, and the Purveyors have chosen Bluegrass. My sweater gets itchy thinking about terms like "Speed-grass" or "Alt-Bluegrass." My apologies to lovers of Crust, Grind, and Streetcore, but it really is all just rock & roll. Bluegrass is bluegrass, whether played by the Bad Livers or by Ralph Stanley. Soul ain't in the name.
The covers of ABBA's "SOS" and Ratt's "Round and Round" are maybe a bit too campy for their own good but, those aside, this record bounces righteously between waltzes ("2:00A.M."and "Circus Clown", the latter probably the best cut on the disc) and the faster numbers that they are known for ("I Have A Devil In Me", "Dues"). In either case, they manage to be both direct and insightful, and they make sense with or without a beer handy.
This is the first The Meat Purveyors release since 1999's More Songs About Buildings and Cows; any layoff rustiness is nowhere to be found.
