I find it hard to believe that Wales pop group Super Furry Animals have been going for near a decade now. While SFA has been putting out some of the best left-field pop music in the past decade not a lot of people have noticed. Huge in the underground world in North America but they have yet to hit the mainstream and I actually doubt that if they haven't done so yet, they probably never will. I haven't been the biggest fan in the past, checking in with the odd album here and there but not feverishly like a lot of people I know. BUT, I do believe after giving Songbook the multiple listens it deserves, I will start going back and checking out some of their stuff a little more carefully. There is absolutely no reason that Super Furry Animals shouldn't be huge. I'm not sure if the masses are ready for pop that is this well crafted. The album kicks off with "Something 4 The Weekend", a summer pop track that was pulled from Fuzzy Logic, their first album for Creation. Then they jump into their 2001 release (and my favorite) Rings Around The World with "It's Not The End Of The World", a mellower track but no less intriguing. Then back again to Guerrilla for Latino tinged "Northern Lites". As you can tell from the first three tracks this compilation jumps all over their career, not really forgetting and key moments. "Slow Life" from Phantom Power is here too, one of the best tracks from that album. I think even longtime fans who own everything will enjoy this 21 song compilation. And, it almost goes without saying that the uninitiated would quickly become a SFA fan with one listen to Songbook Vol. 1. Pick it up and get acquainted with them because their new album is due out later this year.
