While there isn't anything really revolutionary on this tribute album, it is very nice to hear the likes of Johnny Cash paying tribute to country's first family. The impact that The Carter Family had, not only on country music but music in general is mind-boggling. Music has been a part of the Carter Family heritage for over 4 generations now and it shows no sign of letting up yet. To think that these songs were first recorded over 75 years ago is hard to imagine. When artists such as George Jones, Sheryl Crow, John Prine and the Del McCoury band take these songs and make them sound so honest and beautiful you realize that the Carter's had something. Amazingly enough, both June Carter Cash and Johnny Cash had recorded their contributions before they both past away in 2003. Their involvement makes The Unbroken Circle seem even more genuine. I would like to suggest that Sheryl Crow do a country album. I have heard her on a number of country artist's tribute albums and she sounds good with a little twang in her voice. Here she takes on "No Depression in Heaven". Joe and Janette Carter carry on the family tradition by playing these traditional songs at the Carter Fold in the Clinch Mountains every Saturday. Here they do a moving rendition of "Little Moses". Another one to mention is Willie Nelson's version of "You Are My Flower". He sounds at home singing these songs. This is a great album to introduce you to the songs of the Carter Family. It might give you enough faith in the music to go seek out one of the original Carter Family records.
