Hi-Fi Sky - Music For Synchronized Swimming in Space
Psych-folk and sparse guitars dominate this debut release, with a band featuring former members of Hugo Largo. Gorgeous atmospherics drive by guitar and occasional strings give the record a feel somewhere between Euro-Pop and a lighter sounding Feelies.
Ex MTV VJ and former Glenn Branca associate Tim Sommer and Alexandra Scott play all the instruments, with the exception of cello. There is a seamless quality to the eleven songs, as if the piece was conceived as a whole, and then broken up into tasty morsels.
While brooding on the peaceful can be as tedious as brooding on the dark, Hi-Fi Sky avoid the trap of monotony; their minimalist approach has so many colors, so many surprising chord progressions where you least expect them, that you let them have your ear. Even if you are not a fan of quiet, brittle music, you will give this a fair listen if you stick with it past the first song. Here there is only gravy.
