I love the fact that Metal has gotten faster and more dirty. For awhile there, once it lost center stage and became a sub-genre again, it seemed like there was little hope for it if Staind was a sign of things to come. But certainly with even its leaner look, Crust and Grindcore have rendered it irrelevant. Sorry Mastadon. Hell, on more than one occasion classic Metal tended to take good ideas and pound them into the kitschy ground, so the fact that every other band seems to have a pissed off cookie monster on vocals is part of tradition. But that voice was meant for rage, not dollars.
All of this is to say that, while not metal, Combatwoundedveteran was a throwback to the days when thrash had humor and deadly purpose. This compilation of outtakes, 7" releases, and other assorted goodies illustrates just how sorely they are missed. At least we have Bassist Ponch's new band, The Holy Mountain, to keep an eye on. As on their only other record, 2004's I Know A Girl Who Develops Crime Scene Photos, This is brimming with brutal and funky riffs, intelligent editing, and damn foul lyrics. Angry lyrics. I-dare-you-to-avoid-what-I'm-saying lyrics. The song titles give you a clue, but do not do justice to the biggest groove in noise since the early Surfers records: "Plastic Bullets are so '84", I Hope You get cancelled", "also comes in Red, Orange, and Fuck You", the incredible "Jane, You Ignorant Slut", and my early choice for song title of the year: "Asshole Means I'm Better Than You." Right on.
