Trying to count the number of Japanese bands who are obsessed with the sounds coming out of America in 1967-68 is like trying to count the number of Evangelicals who show their love for God by hating the Other. Whether it has been the heavy, trippy-ness of Acid Mother's Temple, and Fushitusha, or the mellow visions of inner mind of Ghost and Nagisa Ni Te, Psychedelia has been mined, and elevated, more by the Japanese than even their American heroes.
Duo-mates Shinji Shibayama and Masako Takeda have updated some previously released work, presenting here four songs re-worked and extended, both in length and in ambition. They have created a hypnotic, beautiful piece of Psych-folk that, with or without chemical assistance, ought to help you into a mood you want to inhabit for weeks.
Neil young and Crazy Horse hover over this record, as they do over other Nagisa efforts; the Neil of extended jams that waste no emotional power, the Neil that brushes against a line of quiet melody and ragged distortion. Classic Rock conventions never sounded so pliable.
The closer, "True Sun", is probably the fastest 20 minute song you'll here in years. Every minute makes sense, is necessary, and creates a gorgeous world of sound. Shibayama takes off into the mystic, and it works.
Shorter, crunchy pop like "The True World and "Anxiety" provide contrast, but also hint at the profound. Though all the lyrics are sung in Japanese, there is no need to worry about maybe getting the wrong vibe from the tunes. This is genius and it knows it; but its genius is quiet and fragile, sneaking you in through a hole in the tent.
