Ill Lit - I Need you
I Need You is Ill Lit's sophomore album even if their first album barely made a blip on the radar. This Brooklyn-based electro-folk group is slowly gaining a fan-base and if you listen to I Need You or their debut WACMusic you can understand it's the voice of Daniel Ahearn that really holds this group together. The band has very thoughtful and insightful lyrics but they hold together very minimal and rootsy instrumentation as well as cut and paste drum-machine beats. The album starts out with "Mid-City", one of the more Grandaddy sounding tracks on the album and probably the most rocking. They ease back quite a bit with "In The Thick", a track where Daniel's voice really takes the stage. "Broken Open Fence" has to be one of the most beautiful songs I have heard (this month anyway). It just barely trudges along talking about not being a fast lover, or a slow lover. Some really intricate but gentle guitar playing and piano bounce off of one another. While not an essential release, I do feel that I Need You will find its way into the hearts of many pop/americana fans hearts. It has enough warmth to melt even the coldest hearts.
