Though I feel like I've just finished listening to The Virgin Suicides soundtrack more or less, I'm not so drained I can't push through this review. "Morning Kills The Dark" is a softly colored decoration of instrument utilization. Pop-Up Recording artist Biirdie (hailing from Los Angeles,CA) who was recently featured at SXSW 2005, conjured up this album with a great deal of geographical A.D.D.
Often it's said there are two sides to every story. Just like a vinyl record (you remember those don't ya?), MKTD is no exception as it features two halves. The first five songs are labeled as the "Morning Side". Mostly featuring a laid back, barely brisk setting of synthesizers, xylophones, tamborine's, and your traditional pop rock instrumentation.
Tracks like "The Other Side Of Sunset" and "Hotel Piano" exemplify the transitional tempo changes. "Hotel Piano" which has a gentle reminiscence of synthesizer like Pink Floyd, (according to the bio) is the 'centerpiece of MKTD' Mostly comparable to a bottle of valium's, the first five songs are rescued by the influence of British-Rock melodies, and Doo-Wop surprises.
Side two (If I may be so bold), "Dark Side" though not a far cry from "Morning Side" certainly awakens the soul a bit more. Managing to show more influences in early sixties trip rock legends The Beattles, its tracks like "I'm Going To Tell You Something" carry a unmistakable song writers camaraderie. Kala Savage (female vocals, synthesizer, piano), and Jared Flamm use their sultry voices to alternate the beginning lyrical verse, eventually coming together to form a chorus of tasteful vibes.
Easily specified as spiritual piano pop, Biirdie combines a hybrid of sounds similar to Dave Pirner (Soul Asylum) vocals and contemporary dream pop. A perfect LP for laying your head to the pillow.
