Soundtrack of Our Lives is a band that mines the 60s psych-rock era to make music that is very relevant today. Now they saw some slight success with radio play from Behind The Music and the track "Sister Surround". Hell, they were even playing it in Calgary! But it seems as though record sales didn't quite follow and that was the only song off of Behind The Music to achieve that success. Now, a whole 4 years later and Origin Vol. 1 is on the streets and it will be very curious to see if this strong album pushes the Nordic group into the spotlight again. Origin is fairly long, clocking in at 52 minutes but for the most part the consensus is that it is worth the time invested. The album opens with "Believe I've Found" taps that psych-rock thing quite nicely. Tracks like "Transcendental Suicide" sound like Brit-pop revisited where I hear a little Oasis in their sound. But then they totally hit their stride on the rocking "Bigtime" sounding like The Beta Band. Then they jump even more into the pop territory with "Heading For A Breakdown". "Midnight Children" is features Jane Birkin playing off of Lundberg, sounding like a Gainsbourg track or more recently, Dean Wareham/Britta Phillips. It's not the strongest track on the album but does provide a little diversity. I think my favorite track is "Lone Summer Dream". There isn't anything that new about it, it just comes off a fun summer song, complete with 'ba-ba-baaa" chorus back-ups.
This is yet another one of those albums that multiple listens reveal new layers and ultimately, if enough time is devoted, Origins Vol. 1 could easily become a favorite.
