Action Action is one of the newer acts to join Victory Records even though band leader Mark Thomas Kuepfel was on the label with his former group, The Reunion Show. Don't Cut Your Fabric To This Year's Fashion is an album that you probably wouldn't expect on Victory. It isn't emo (although it will probably get labeled as that) and it's definitely not hardcore of any sort. Action Action is all about pop and that's pretty much it. They incorporate a little electronics into some of their songs and when they do they really aren't far off of what The Postal Service has been up to, although much poppier. Mark moved away from the pure pop sounds of The Reunion Show but brought Skully the drummer with him. He recruited Adam and Clarke from Count The Stars and the power-pop of Action Action was born. The group often relies on vintage keyboards giving the music a big of a retro feel but all very relevant. Somehow the band managed to secure Cyndi Lauper's producer, William Wittman to produce Fabric. The result is a very upbeat slice of power-pop that is very accessible while not being too sugary. The first track, "This Year's Fashion" does take a little while to get going. The punch doesn't come until over 2 minutes in but when it does it proves to be worth the wait. "Drug Like" gets us prepared for the synth sound that Action Action goes back to a couple times on the album. This could easily be a Psychedelic Furs era song. "Photograph" is one of the most upbeat tracks on the album, reminding me quite a bit of The Bloody Chiclets. Kuepfel changes the tempos quite often resulting in quite a diverse collection of songs. Indie purists may laugh at this album but in reality, these are all decent pop songs that deserve a little attention.
