It seems that Wilco's movie has spawned the rockumentary once again. While it is obvious that Ondi Timoner started this long before Sam did the Wilco movie. Dig is the story about two fairly notorious bands and their friendship/rivalry. The bands are the Dandy Warhols and The Brian Jonestown massacre. Ondi has some pretty scathing footage of Anton Newcombe and his Brian Jonestown Massacre and their attempt to make it on a label as opposed to doing things all on their own. On the flipside, you have Courtney Taylor and the Dandy Warhols who chose the major label route and have nothing good to say about that experience. Drugs and rock and roll are the theme throughout. Also some big egos to go along.
Dig was shot over 7 years and the way that the details are all presented is so rock and roll. Courtney is the narrator and he keeps referring to the genius of Anton and that he keeps trying to catch up but never does, even though the Dandy Warhols are a much more successful band than BJM. The movie won the Grand Jury Prize at the 2004 Sundance Film Festival. It is a very decent movie if you like hearing the stories of bands and the trials and tribulations that they go through.
The DVD does come with an extra disc of special features including many deleted scenes, live performances and videos, and a Where Are They Now feature.
