I've always preferred Sam Prekop solo albums to that of his counterpart Archer Prewitt. Oh, they are both excellent pop songwriters but this critic has a softer spot for that of Prekop. His new album on Jade Tree is called Who's Your New Professor and it is not all that different than his self-titled debut album from a couple years back. I'm reviewing this not to long after being exposed to Archer's Wilderness album and trust me when I say that Prekop has once again reigned supreme in the solo album division. Professor is far from a perfect album but it is a pretty album. It's his breathy vocals (can't think of a better way to describe them). On "Two Dedications" we get layered Sam vocals caressing each ear as they make their way into our cerebrum. And on "Chicago People" he reaches out even further with soft jazz influences. A strange absence on Professor is Jim O'Rourke. Not sure why he wasn't involved but you can feel it. Regardless, Who's your new professor is a good album to put on to relax to. It's hard not to let your cares float away when Sam is singing. Sam Prekop has come miles from his days with Shrimp Boat and has molded his experience in Sea and Cake to bring us this very impressive solo album.
