Here's an interesting band from Edmonton, AB. AA Sound System is a fairly new band that has both feet in the Americana side of music. You wouldn't guess it when their debut Lily Plain... You're Hardly Poor kicks off with the "Intro". You think you are in for psych folk album. But as early as "40oz To 40 Days" we are treated to the first country track. It's that weird bass sound that AA Sound System manage that really throws me for a loop. The band does manage to fit in a little bit of the psych folk in places but in essence, Lily Plain is an alt.country album in every way. Hell, they even get into the surf guitar, ala Atomic 7 on "Stratochief", an instrumental. But on songs like "Down Before" we are given the bleak life lessons of the band. "I Don't Know About You" is a 7 minute epic that is one of the couple standouts on the album. I would suggest that you listen to Lily Plain on a road trip.

Lily Plain is a great debut album. I think AA Sound System should provide us with some even better music in the near future though. This is an album from a band that is youthful and still on the gelling stages. Production on this album is one of the best parts. It's a bit of a different mix with some of the instruments taking lead role but it seems to work with AA Sound System's persona.
